Our brand takes its name and spirit from acts of courage chosen over captivity. In 1803, Igbo captives being transported to St. Simons Island, Georgia, rose up against the crew that held them. Rather than submit to enslavement, they walked into Dunbar Creek together —a final, deliberate act of self-determination in the face of unbearable loss.

One year later, that same refusal to accept bondage reshaped a nation. Under Jean-Jacques Dessalines, formerly enslaved Haitians defeated French colonial forces and declared Haiti's independence on January 1, 1804 — the first free Black republic born from a successful slave revolt.

Two moments, an ocean apart in outcome but joined in spirit: people who would not be owned, and who acted on that conviction at whatever cost. That refusal —the choice of dignity over submission — is what we carry into our name and everything we build under it.

The bravery of these acts lives on through the Gullah Geechee people

and the Haitian diaspora today.
